Shamanic Services and Spiritual Support

Ceremony

Ceremonies are ancient and powerful ways to mark important moments and significant events in our lives. Ceremony ritualizes the crossing of a threshold—everything from becoming an adult to becoming an elder, codifying a marriage or divorce, becoming a parent, starting a new job, buying a house, or moving across the country. Celebrating
significant beginnings or endings (and often both) helps provide meaning and emphasizes how we grow through these experiences.

Healing

Healing can look like many things from a shamanic perspective. Shamanic healing addresses illness or pain, whether physical, mental, or emotional, at the spirit level. As such, it does not take the place of allopathic or medical treatments; quite the opposite, an integrative approach often enhances recovery by aligning the spiritual with the
physical, mental, and emotional aspects of healing.

Divination

Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads, unable to pick a direction. At these times, we may need a hint as to what our next move should be. Exploring the spiritual realm can provide insight, clarity, or illumination to a situation or question we are struggling with.

Death and Dying

From a shamanic perspective, death is not an end; instead, it is a transition, a rite of passage. A person at the end of life often needs spiritual connection and active presence at their side. It is important to validate the person’s spiritual experience, provide comfort for their fear or
anxiety, and help them achieve a final sense of healing and closure. After the soul has crossed over, it may also be appropriate to act as a guide to
the afterlife.

What is Shamanism?

In the stories of our lives, we spend much of our time in our heads; virtually all of our online activities through computers, phones, and devices—games, puzzles, news and analysis, calendars, or even social media sites—filter connections through our minds. We also focus strongly on our bodies, emphasizing physical development, appearance, and activity.

However, as mind-body-heart-spirit beings, this imbalance can leave us feeling like something is missing. While we fill every day to overflowing with mental and physical pursuits, we often downplay our emotional lives and relegate even less—perhaps only a few hours per week—to spiritual nourishment and fulfillment.

A good definition of spirit is the non-physical part of a person, which they regard as their true self; some people call this the soul. Spirituality means different things to different people: it can revolve around a higher being, creator, or something greater than ourselves. Others see it as how we connect with other people or beings and with nature and the world as a whole.

Regardless of how we define it, spirituality often involves seeking purpose and meaning for ourselves and our ways of being in the world. Exploring spirituality can help people find answers to philosophical questions like “What is the meaning of life?” and “What purpose does my life serve?”

Many people seek spiritual experiences to help cope with the stresses of life. In fact, these experiences can measurably decrease symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety. They can help spark or restore optimism and develop a more hopeful and joyful perspective on life. Spiritual practices can often create or strengthen one’s own centeredness, grounding, and energy flow, leading to greater confidence and belief in oneself and fostering a positive outlook. In other words, healing our spiritual lives can also go a long way toward helping the heart and restoring the mind-body-heart-spirit balance.

How does shamanism fit into all of this?

One way to define shamanism is as a path of direct revelation to the spiritual or the divine. At its most broad, shamanism is a series of spiritual practices used by numerous cultures around the world for the past few thousand years or more. While the word itself comes from a Siberian tribal name for their version of these practices, it has been extended to represent similar traditions from a wide range of cultures around the globe. And while there are specific traditions and rituals unique to each culture and tribe, the overall form and usage of shamanic practices contain commonalities across all those who perform them. In fact, there are shamanic practices, including trance, ecstatic dance, divination, and healing, embedded within most of the world’s main religions. These general practices—and others— can provide a source to nourish the neglected spirit and more deeply explore and manifest your own spiritual story.
