End of Life Care

My goal in end of life care is to provide a comforting presence, ease pain and anxiety, and maintain or improve overall quality of life for the individual while supporting their loved ones.

Why End of Life Care is Important

At the very end of everyone’s story is death. Though it comes to all of us, it can be uncomfortable, sad, and even frightening to watch as our loved one passes— as it may be for our loved one to experience.

On the other hand, end of life can also be a time of beauty and deep connection. With support, we can be active participants in a loved one’s passing, creating a sacred and heart-healing experience. A healing end of life process often involves reminiscing on joyful and meaningful memories together, affirming relationships across family and friendships to strengthen bonds, and providing opportunities for everyone involved to express gratitude and love.

Often, at the end of life, our loved ones face physical, mental, and emotional changes that are uncomfortable at best, and more often scary or painful. They may feel frightened, confused, or lonely, which can lead to diminishing health, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, caring for someone at end of life can involve many challenging, new tasks, whether providing for their medical, nutritional, or emotional requirements, or even simply being able to spend the time with them that they need. As such, caregivers also need support during this time; this role often comes with additional stress, anxiety, and burnout if attention isn’t given to self-care.

In spite of all the challenges around caring for people at the end of their lives, our loved ones always have the right to dignity and respect. Through the very last moment of our loved one’s story, they deserve joy, beauty, and comfort.

What an End of Life Care session might look like

Any end of life care session will always be guided by the individual who is passing. Most important is being present to them in whatever way they need in the moment. A session may include:

  • Singing favorite songs together or for them
  • Listening to relaxing, gentle, or favorite music
  • Reminiscing about childhood, family, or military service
  • Reading to them
  • Even just providing a quiet, comforting presence, holding their hand

Nobody knows how long an individual’s passing will take, from hours to weeks or months. As a comforting presence during this time, continuity is important to establish trust and rapport. Therefore, two sessions a month is the minimum for end of life care visits.

I want to make end of life care accessible to all who need it. If you’re not able to afford a service at the listed price, please reach out to discuss what might work for you. Payment plans, trade of services, and discounts are among the possibilities. We’re entering into a reciprocal relationship; money is the standard currency but far from the only one.
