What is Therapeutic Sound?

Therapeutic sound is a healing modality using vibration and frequencies— the same language the body uses to communicate with itself— to reduce anxiety and stress, relieve physical, mental, and emotional pain, and help regulate and support your body’s innate ability to heal. Research shows it is also able to help reduce dependency on drugs and narcotics.

Therapeutic sound, also called sound therapy or sound healing, has been used effectively for thousands of years. Science is only now discovering the mechanisms behind its many and varied beneficial effects on the entire body-mind-heart-spirit organism. From interrupting the pain-spasm-pain cycle, to increasing blood oxygen levels, to stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, therapeutic sound can help ease symptoms of physical and mental illness and emotional challenges. Therapeutic sound— like music—is able to stimulate immune system processes to facilitate and support a person’s healing without the side effects of pharmaceuticals. It does this by providing the stable, consistent vibrations our cells and organs need to thrive.

I offer these benefits through both individual therapeutic sound sessions and group sound baths.

Therapeutic Sound FAQ

What should I expect during a session?

Each session is a unique experience. As your physical body relaxes and realigns, your thoughts and emotions begin to shift, and your energy becomes unstuck and starts to flow, you may feel deeply relaxed, lighter, grounded and centered, energized and warm, or a combination of all of these. You may also notice the following sensations during the session:

  • An intermittent trance-like state or out-of-body experience
  • Sleepiness, even to the point of falling asleep
  • Buzzing and tingling in and around the body
  • Spontaneous insights or a rapid succession of images
  • Emotional release
  • Temporary discomfort, pain, or twitches as muscles relax and energy is released
How should I prepare for a session?

Take some time to think about what you want to work on and what your intention will be for your session. Drink plenty of water before the session. Avoid drugs and alcohol; the experience is more powerful and beneficial if you are present and involved in the process. Wear warm, comfortable clothing. Be positive and be open to the highest healing possible.

After session care and integration.

Each person will respond to each session in unique ways. Most of the time, you will feel wonderful after a session; however, occasionally you may experience what is called a healing response: this can include feeling fatigued, having sore muscles, or feeling waves of emotion, headaches, runny nose, sore throat, or upset stomach. Any of these may last from a few hours to a few days. This is a good and beneficial thing— it signifies the body is releasing toxins and shifting what needs to be shifted to heal and transform. If you do experience a healing or detox response, rest assured you will feel better in a short amount of time, with a new sense of balance and harmony.

I recommend that you drink plenty of water after a session, refrain from drugs and alcohol, and get plenty of rest. Pay attention to your needs during this time; take a nap or a bath, go for a walk in nature, or journal. Remember that there is a lot happening within after a session. Nurture yourself physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is an immersive, full-body listening experience that uses frequency and vibration (or sound) in an intentional way to nurture your entire body-mind-heart-spirit organism. After a few minutes of guided breathing, the remainder of the experience is filled with different sounds created by a variety of instruments. The sounds played during a sound bath are an invitation into a deeper state of consciousness, where you may unplug from external stimuli and even gain perspective on what’s going on within you. The goal of the experience is to invite deep rest and relaxation, become grounded and centered, and foster a sense of balance and connection.

As with any healing modality, sometimes one session is all it takes to come back into alignment; or, sometimes it takes weeks or months of sessions to journey through pain or trauma to renewal and equilibrium. Sometimes all that is necessary is regular maintenance.
